Learn
Piano
If you are beginning to learn piano, the
following suggestions will be most helpful.
The first thing you need to do to learn piano is find a teacher who is
qualified. Many people will try to tell you that you can learn from a book, or by playing by “ear.” It certainly is possible to learn this
way, but probably not to learn well, and probably not to become an excellent pianist. You will learn quicker and better if you take lessons
from a certified piano teacher. If you are thinking of starting your child on piano lessons, do not make the mistake of taking lessons from a
friend who plays, just to “try it out,” unless of course the friend is a qualified teacher. If you child has a proficiency and decides to
stick with it, they will have a hard time unlearning bad habits they acquire from an unqualified teacher.
The second thing to learn piano seems obvious, but it is where a lot of new
students go wrong when learning piano. You need to practice regularly! You are probably thinking “of course,” but many people take up an
instrument and fail to make the commitment to practice as they should. Here are some tips to make the most of each practice session. Practice
at least twenty minutes a day. Also, do not practice when you are tired or distracted if you can avoid it. Start each practice session with
warm-up exercises. They routinely work through the pieces you are learning.
When starting any new instrument, and when you learn piano, it is important to set
goals for yourself, but make those goals realistic. If you are learning a new piece, set a certain amount of sections that you will learn
every day, whether it be pages or measures or lines. Keep these goals in line with your level of ability. Your teacher should be able to help
you set these types of goals.
It is important when you learn piano to work on sight reading skills. When you can
read music easily, you will be able to learn piano pieces quicker. Work on sight-reading by having some books that are at a slightly easier
skill level, and practice playing songs you have never seen before.
Finally, the last tip is a little strange, but it will help your interpretation of
musical pieces as you learn piano. If you can, read about the composer that you are playing. As you understand their personality and their
life, you will be able to interpret their music more authentically. Learning about the composer will help you to approach their songs more
realistically.
As with most things in life, becoming a great pianist takes dedication and
perseverance. The skills a new pianist needs to learn piano will not come over night. Spend time honing your skills, make a commitment not to
quit, and soon you will be playing piano with the best of them!
